BEFORE YOU DIE - PART 58

<img src="http://radioetiopia.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1076890/0x0_1950945.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />EDDIE.AND.THE.HOT.RODS.-.LIFE.ON.THE.LINE

Eddie & the Hot Rods' much-anticipated second album appeared in fall 1977, on the heels of the band's biggest hit single yet, the gloriously anthemic "Do Anything You Wanna Do." Like that attraction, Life on the Line revealed a considerably more mature musical outlook than did its predecessor, the fury-whipped Teenage Depression -- aware that there was no point in pursuing their original whiplash R&B-soaked visions in the face of the ever-accelerating hordes of punk, the Hot Rods swerved into a hard-hitting prototype of what would later become power pop, awash with guitars and riffs, but clinging to some genuinely memorable melodies, too. Of course, the band did not wholly eschew their past -- excuse the young Steve Lillywhite's sparkling production, and both the Pistols-guitar powered "Quit This Town" and the premonitory closer, "Beginning of the End" would readily have fit into Teenage Depression. Flip the coin, however, and the instrumental "We Sing...The Cross" reached far beyond any musical pastures the band had hitherto grazed, toward the same extremes of tension and release that made the early Television such a dynamic experience. The end result was an album that still screams "classic" today -- hard to believe, indeed, that prior to its release, it was difficult to imagine the band ever equalling the triumphant punch of the hit. Nine bonus tracks wrap up the reissue, albeit with considerably less illumination than those which complete the Teenage Depression reissue. The best is the B-side "Distortion May Be Expected," which wanders around similar territory to "We Sing...The Cross," with added jungle, crowd, and, oddly, dub effects, while three live tracks do include a magnificent reading of "Do Anything You Wanna Do." Elsewhere, "Till The Night Is Gone" and "Flipside Rock" fascinate via the presence of MC5 frontman Rob Tyner, in London to check out the punk scene, and winding up with the one band that really didn't wear his old band's name on their sleeve. Musically, the ensuing single was a disappointment, but the possibilities still intrigue.

BEFORE YOU DIE - PART 60

LOU REED - THE BELLS

The Bells is the ninth album by Lou Reed released through Arista Records in 1979. It is recorded in binaural sound. "City Lights" is a tribute to Charlie Chaplin. "Disco Mystic" is indeed played in a disco style, and the lyrics consist of those two words repeated. "Families" is an explicitly personal entreaty to his own parents and sister, with the closing line "Families that live out in the suburbs often make each other cry". "I Want to Boogie With You" has a doo-wop flavor (even if underneath the horns are the synthesizers which permeate this album), a I-to-IV Plagal cadence repeated throughout. The title track is said to be a favorite of Reed's, and he claims the lyrics were made up extemporaneously.

BEFORE YOU DIE - PART 62

<img src="http://radioetiopia.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1076890/0x0_1829798.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />YOUNG.MARBLE.GIANTS - COLOSSAL YOUTH

Colossal Youth is the first and only LP by Young Marble Giants, released in 1980 on Rough Trade Records. Young Marble Giants were offered the opportunity to record the album after Rough Trade heard just two songs by the band on the local Cardiff music compilation, Is The War Over?.

The album was recorded in three and half days at Foel Studios in North Wales for £1000. The band was able to record fast and cheaply by using many of their first takes on the record in a deliberate attempt to keep the music 'alive'. The only overdubbing on the record is a slide guitar on one track and distorted vocals on another.

Track listing:

"Searching for Mr. Right"
"Include Me Out"
"The Taxi"
"Eating Noddemix"
"Constantly Changing"
"N.I.T.A."
"Colossal Youth"
"Music for Evenings"
"The Man Amplifier"
"Choci Loni"
"Wurlitzer Jukebox"
"Salad Days"
"Credit in the Straight World"
"Brand - New - Life"
"Wind in the Rigging"
The re-release including the following bonus tracks, taken from the Testcard EP, and some B-sides:

"This Way"
"Posed by Models"
"Clock"
"Clicktalk"
"Zebra Trucks"
"Sporting Life"
"Final Day"
"Radio Silents"
"Cake Walking"
"Ode to Booker T"

Personnel:

Stuart Moxham - guitar and organ
Alison Statton - vocals
Philip Moxham - bass

BEFORE YOU DIE - PART 63

<img src="http://radioetiopia.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1076890/0x0_1773307.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />THE STRANGLERS - LA FOLIE

La Folie is an album by The Stranglers, recorded and released in 1981.
The Stranglers had initially been the most commercially successful band of the punk/new-wave period in Britain, but by 1981, their success had waned noticeably. The La Folie album was a conscious attempt to deliver a more commercial product. The band's record company, EMI, sent them into the studio with famous producer Tony Visconti, giving him a brief to "produce each song as if it was a hit single".
The album’s French language title "La Folie" literally translates into English as "Madness". In various interviews, the band related that this referred to "The Madness of Love" and that conceptually, each of the songs on the album was intended to explore a different kind or aspect of "love". The title track is also said to be based upon the story of Issei Sagawa.
The track "Golden Brown" gave the band the renewed commercial success they were seeking; released as a single, it reached No. 2 in the UK chart in January 1982, and went on to become EMI's highest selling single for many years. Many buyers were seemingly unaware of the meaning of the lyrics, which contain metaphorical references to heroin. This may have been further confused by different band members claiming that the song was about desertification, imperialism and as said in a recent interview, "toast".
Other singles from the album were: "Let Me Introduce You To The Family" (No. 42 in November 1981) and the title-track, "La Folie", which reached No. 47 in April 1982. Upon release "La Folie" looked set to be the band's lowest charting album, but, bouyed by the success of "Golden Brown", the album eventually peaked at no.11 in the UK album chart, and spent 18 weeks on the chart.
Hugh Cornwell related in The Stranglers - Song by Song that the correct title of the album's opening track was in fact "Non Stop Nun", and he apparently had been unaware that the record company had printed it as simply "Non Stop".

BEFORE YOU DIE - PART 64

<img src="http://radioetiopia.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1076890/0x0_1756439.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />TALKING HEADS - MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS & FOOD

More Songs About Buildings and Food is Talking Heads' second album, the first of a string of three produced with Brian Eno. The album was significantly more popular than their first, Talking Heads: 77. The band's blend of funky bass, bubblegum, country, reggae and punk influences, with David Byrne's unique voice, established the group as a critical success known for their live shows, but still with disappointing album sales.

More Songs about Buildings and Food peaked at #29 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart, while the Al Green cover "Take Me to the River" peaked at #26 on the Pop Singles chart in 1979.

The front cover of the album which was conceived and executed by David Byrne is a photomosaic of the band made of 529 close-up Polaroid photographs.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 382 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 2006, it was ranked the 45th-best album of the 1970s by Pitchfork Media.

In 2005, it was re-released and remastered by Warner Music Group on their Warner Bros./Sire Records/Rhino Records labels in DualDisc format, with four bonus tracks on the CD side ("Stay Hungry" (1977 version), alternate versions of "I'm Not in Love" and "The Big Country", and the 'Country angel' version of "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel"). The DVD-Audio side includes both stereo and 5.1 surround high resolution (96 kHz/24bit) mixes, as well as a Dolby Digital version and videos of the band performing "Found a Job" and "Warning Sign." In Europe, it was released as a CD+DVDA two disc set rather than a single DualDisc. The reissue was produced by Andy Zax with Talking Heads

<img src="http://radioetiopia.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1076890/0x0_1719306.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />MY.LIFE.IN.THE.BUSH.OF.GHOSTS

BRIAN ENO & DAVID BYRNE

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a 1981 album by Brian Eno and David Byrne, titled after Amos Tutuola's 1954 novel of the same name. The album was re-released in expanded form in 2006.

Receiving strong reviews upon its release, My Life is now regarded as a high point in the discographies of Eno and Byrne. In a 1985 interview, singer Kate Bush stated the album "left a very big mark on popular music," while critic John Bush describes it as "[a] pioneering work for countless styles connected to electronics, ambience, and Third World music."

Recording details
Eno had collaborated with Byrne's group Talking Heads on Fear of Music in 1979, and My Life was recorded mostly in a break between touring for that album, and the recording of Talking Heads' Remain in Light from 1980.

Drawing on funk and world music (particularly the multi-layered percussion of African music), My Life is similar to Talking Heads' music of the same era. The "found objects" credited to Eno and Byrne were common objects used mostly as percussion. In the notes for the 2006 expanded edition of the album, Byrne writes that they would often use a normal drum kit, but with a cardboard box replacing the bass drum, or a frying pan replacing the snare drum; this would blend the familiar drum sound with unusual percussive noises.

However, rather than featuring conventional pop or rock singing, most of the vocals are sampled from other sources, such as commercial recordings of Arabic singers, radio disc jockeys, and an exorcist. Musicians had previously used similarly sampling techniques, but critic Dave Simpson declares it had never before been used "to such cataclysmic effect" as on My Life.

The album was recorded entirely with analogue technology, before the advent of digital sequencing and MIDI. The sampled voices were synchronized with the instrumental tracks via trial and error, a practice that was often frustrating, but which also produced several happy accidents.

Original package design was created by Peter Saville. For the re-release, the new artwork was designed by Peter Buchanan-Smith, with booklet cover images and studio photography by Hugh Brown.

BEFORE YOU DIE - PART 66

<img src="http://radioetiopia.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1076890/0x0_1680612.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />TOM WAITS - SMALL CHANGE

The album featured famed drummer Shelly Manne, and was, like Waits' previous albums, heavily jazz influenced, with a lyrical style that owed influence to Raymond Chandler and Charles Bukowski as well as a vocal delivery influenced by Louis Armstrong. The music for the most part consists of Waits' hoarse, rough voice, set against a backdrop of piano, upright bass, drums and saxophone.

"Tom Traubert's Blues" opens the album. Jay S. Jacobs has described the song as a "stunning opener ets the tone for what follows." The refrain is based almost word by word on the 1890 Australian song, "Waltzing Matilda" by A.B. "Banjo" Paterson.

The origin of the song is somewhat ambiguous. The most plausible version, the sub-title of the track "Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen", seems to be that it is about a time that Waits spent in Copenhagen in 1976 while on a tour. There, he apparently met Danish singer Mathilde Bondo. In a 1998 radio interview, she confirmed that she met Waits and that they spent a night on the town together. Waits himself described the song's subject during a concert in Sydney Australia in March 1979 as "Uh, well I met this girl named Matilda. And uh, I had a little too much to drink that night. This is about throwing up in a foreign country." In an interview on NPR's World Cafe, aired December 15, 2006, Waits stated that Tom Traubert was a "friend of a friend" who died in prison.

Bones Howe, the album's producer, recalls when Waits first came to him with the song:

He said the most wonderful thing about writing that song. He went down and hung around on skid row in L.A. because he wanted to get stimulated for writing this material. He called me up and said, 'I went down to skid row ... I bought a pint of rye. In a brown paper bag.' I said, 'Oh really?'. 'Yeah - hunkered down, drank the pint of rye, went home, threw up, and wrote 'Tom Traubert's Blues [...] Every guy down there ... everyone I spoke to, a woman put him there."

Howe was amazed when he first heard the song, and he's still astonished by it. "I do a lot of seminars," he says. "Occasionally I'll do something for songwriters. They all say the same thing to me. 'All the great lyrics are done.' And I say, 'I'm going to give you a lyric that you never heard before."' Howe then says to his aspiring songwriters, "A battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace / And a wound that will never heal." This particular Tom Waits lyric Howe considers to be "brilliant. " It's "the work of an extremely talented lyricist, poet, whatever you want to say. That is brilliant, brilliant work. And he never mentions the person, but you see the person."

The song has been recorded by Rod Stewart on the albums Lead Vocalist and Unplugged and Seated under the title "Tom Traubert's Blues (Waltzing Matilda)".

Album closer "I Can't Wait to Get Off Work (And See My Baby on Montgomery Avenue)" has a simple musical arrangement, boasting only Waits' voice and piano. The lyrics are about Waits' first job at Napoleone Pizza House (still at 619 National City Blvd, National City, CA) in San Diego, which he began in 1965, at the age of 16.

Themes
At the time of the recording of Small Change Waits was drinking more and more heavily, and life on the road was starting to take its toll on him. Waits, looking back at the period said:

I was sick through that whole period [...] It was starting to wear on me, all the touring. I'd been travelling quite a bit, living in hotels, eating bad food, drinking a lot - too much. There's a lifestyle that's there before you arrive and you're introduced to it. It's unavoidable.

In reaction to these hardships Waits recorded Small Change (1976), which finds Waits in much more cynical and pessimistic mood lyrically than his previous albums, with many songs such as "The Piano Has Been Drinking" and "Bad Liver and a Broken Heart" presenting a bare and honest portrayal of alcoholism, while also cementing Waits' hard-living reputation in the eyes of many fans. The album's themes include those of desolation, deprivation, and, above all else, alcoholism. The cast of characters, which includes hookers, strippers and small-time losers, are for the most part, night-owls and drunks; people lost in a cold, urban world.

With the album Waits asserted that he "tried to resolve a few things as far as this cocktail-lounge, maudlin, crying-in-your-beer image that I have. There ain't nothin' funny about a drunk [...] I was really starting to believe that there was something amusing and wonderfully American about being a drunk. I ended up telling myself to cut that shit out."

However, beyond the serious themes with which the album deals, the lyrics are often also noted for their humour; with songs such as "The Piano Has Been Drinking" and "Bad Liver And A Broken Heart" including puns and jokes in their treatment of alcoholism, with the added humour in Waits' drunken diction.

It received critical reviews equal to or better than Waits's previous albums, but was at first a surprise commercial success, rising to #89 on the Billboard chart within two weeks of its release. However, Small Change fell off the Billboard Top 200 three weeks later, and Waits was never to better its position until 1999's Mule Variations

When asked in interview by Q Magazine in 1999 if he shared many fans' view that Small Change was the crowning moment of his "beatnik-glory- meets-Hollywood-noir period" (i.e. from 1973-1980), Waits replied

Well, gee. I'd say there's probably more songs off that record that I continued to play on the road, and that endured. Some songs you may write and record but you never sing them again. Others you sing em every night and try and figure out what they mean. "Tom Traubert's Blues" was certainly one of those songs I continued to sing, and in fact, close my show with.
