GOING.FOR.THE.ONE.by. YES Going for the One is the eighth studio album by British progressive rock band Yes. It was released in 1977 after an extended break for solo activity, and is especially notable for marking the return of keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who had departed in 1974 in the aftermath of the Tales from Topographic Oceans tour. His re-entry was facilitated by the departure of Patrick Moraz, after having only played on Relayer, although Moraz is thanked in the credits. After their extended break, the band regrouped in Switzerland, refreshed and ready to record in late 1976. The album was recorded at Mountain Studios by recording engineers John Timperley and David Richards. After constructing epic tracks for the last few years, Yes felt inspired to scale things back a bit and recorded some of their most direct and concise material since Fragile. Wakeman also varied his sound by largely forsaking his mellotron and experimenting with church organ on "Parallels" and the sole extended track, "Awaken". Track listing Side one 1. CAPTAIN.BEEFHEART.&.MAGIC.BAND.-.TROUT.MASK.REPLICA Trout Mask Replica is the third studio album by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, released in June, 1969. The album was produced by Frank Zappa, a friend and former schoolmate of Beefheart, and was originally released on Zappa's Straight Records imprint. Combining blues, avant-garde, free jazz and other disparate genres of American music, Trout Mask Replica is regarded as an important work of experimental music and a major influence in alternative rock. A widely recognized and acclaimed composition, Trout Mask Replica appears at number fifty-eight on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". The compositions on Trout Mask Replica draw their inspiration primarily from blues and free jazz but also include elements of genres ranging from folk music to the current avant-garde of classical music to sea shanties and beyond. All this was blended into an iconoclastic whole of conflicting tempi, harsh slide guitar, extraordinarily complex drumming, and honking saxophone and bass clarinet. Van Vliet's vocals range from growling blues singing to frenzied falsetto to laconic, casual ramblings. His lyrics often seem impenetrably strange and nonsensical, but closer examination reveals complex poetic use of word play, metaphor and all manner of references: music history, American and international politics, the Holocaust, love and sexuality, Steve Reich, gospel music, conformity, and man's impact on his surroundings. The famous BBC disc jockey John Peel said of the album: "If there has been anything in the history of popular music which could be described as a work of art in a way that people who are involved in other areas of art would understand, then Trout Mask Replica is probably that work." Peel's playing of the record on late-night radio in Britain was largely responsible for its reaching 21 in the UK charts. Critic Steve Huey writes that the album's influence "was felt more in spirit than in direct copycatting, as a catalyst rather than a literal musical starting point. However, its inspiring reimagining of what was possible in a rock context laid the groundwork for countless experiments in rock surrealism to follow, especially during the punk/new wave era." Matt Groening has written that his first reaction to Trout Mask Replica was that it was "the worst thing [he]'d ever heard", but now lists the album as one of his favorites. In his 1995 book, "The Alternative Music Almanac", Alan Cross placed the album in the spot on the list of '10 Classic Alternative Albums'. Andy Warhol suggested the album should be called "John and Yoko." The musicians on this album are listed as the crew of fighter airplane, with Cale as the flight surgeon. EGBERTO.GISMONTI.-.CIRCENSE De família musical, começou a estudar piano aos cinco anos. Ainda na infância e adolescência, seus estudos no Conservatório já incluíram flauta, clarinete, violão e piano. Em 1968, participou de um festival da TV Globo com a canção "O Sonho", que atraiu a atenção do público e elogios da crítica. Partiu nesse mesmo ano para a França, onde estudou música dodecafônica com Jean Barraqué e análise músical com Nadia Boulanger. Em 1969, lançou seu primeiro disco, Egberto Gismonti, com forte influência da Bossa Nova. O álbum, hoje cult, acabaria sendo uma de suas obras mais acessíveis, dado que, nos anos 1970, Gismonti se dedicaria a pesquisas musicais e experimentações com estruturas complexas e instrumentos inusitados, voltando-se quase exclusivamente para a música instrumental. A hesitação das gravadoras brasileiras com o seu estilo o levou a procurar refúgio em selos europeus, pelos quais lançou vários álbuns pelas décadas seguintes. Gismonti explorou diversas avenidas da música, sempre imprimindo o seu interesse pessoal: o choro o levou a estudar o violão de oito cordas e a flauta, a curiosidade com a tecnologia e a influência da Europa o levaram aos sintetizadores, a curiosidade com o folclore e as raízes do Brasil o levaram a estudar a música indígena do Brasil, tendo mesmo morado por um breve período com índios yawaiapiti, do Alto Xingu. A carreira de Gismonti prosseguiu sólida - se não comercialmente explosiva - e o artista continuou gravando seus álbuns e participando de discos alheios, além de fazer turnês de sucesso, especialmente na Europa. Entre os músicos com os quais colaborou ou colaboraram com ele, destacam-se Naná Vasconcelos, Marlui Miranda, Charlie Haden, Jan Garbarek, André Geraissati, Jaques Morelenbaum, Hermeto Pascoal, Airto Moreira e Flora Purim. Gismonti nos anos 80 recomprou todo o seu repertório de composições e tornou-se um dos únicos compositores do país donos de seu próprio acervo. Much use was made of custom-built sequencing equipment, which helped Kraftwerk achieve the precise, minimalist pop sound distinctive of the album. The equipment in question, the Synthanorma-Sequenzer, had previously been used in its standard form by other synthesizer musicians, such as Klaus Schulze (on his 1975 album Timewind) and Edgar Froese of Tangerine Dream. Kraftwerk's, however, was a special version created specifically for them by Matten & Wiechers in conjunction with Ralf Hütter. This enhanced "Kraftwerk-sequenzer" allowed precise control of voltages over a range of 10 octaves, eliminating the need for the time-consuming tuning of pitches; it also enabled the exact reproduction of complex or lengthy pre-determined patterns – such as the keyboard arpeggios in "Europe Endless" and "Franz Schubert" or the driving train-like rhythm of "Trans-Europe Express" – at precisely measured clock speeds, combined with the ability to easily and quickly modify them. The instrument greatly improved Kraftwerk's recreation of their music in performance, whereas previously everything would have had to be played by hand. The first disc is a live album of their normal set list of the time, while the second one contains individual compositions by each member of the band recorded as a studio album. Title The album's title supposedly comes from a Cambridge slang word for sex, commonly used by one of Pink Floyd's friends and occasional roadie, Ian "Emo" Moore who would say 'I'm going back to the house for some Ummagumma' .However, some band members have since stated that the word was "totally made up and means nothing at all". In footage of the band rehearsing for a Royal Albert Hall appearance in 1969, one of the band members can be heard, off camera, quietly chanting the word "ummagumma". Background Although the sleeve notes say that the live material was recorded in June 1969, the first disc of Ummagumma was recorded live at Mothers Club, Birmingham, on 27 April 1969 and the following week at Manchester College of Commerce, on 2 May 1969; the second disc included four solo segments, one half-side of vinyl each by, in order: Richard Wright, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Nick Mason. The band had also recorded a live version of "Interstellar Overdrive" (from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn), intended for placement on side one of the live album. The track was dropped at the last minute, some say to maintain the sound fidelity of the record, but numerous test pressings with the original track list were given to friends of the band, including John Peel. Other sources[who?] have claimed that the song was dropped because of a conflict over the music publishing rights. PETER.HAMMILL.-.THE.SILENT.CORNER.&.THE.EMPTY.STAGE The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage is the third album by British singer-songwriter Peter Hammill. It was released on Charisma Records in 1974, during a hiatus in the activities of Hammill's progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. However, like many of Hammill's "solo" albums of this period, all the members of Van der Graaf Generator perform on the recording, blurring the distinction between solo and group work. Hammill has often performed the song "Modern" in concert. "The Lie (Bernini's Saint Theresa)" partly alludes to the Ecstasy of St Theresa by Bernini. "Red Shift" features Spirit guitarist Randy California on lead guitar. The lengthy "A Louse is not a Home" is a full blown prog rock epic, featuring melodramatic lyrics reminiscent of gothic horror writer Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Fall of the House of Usher, upon which Hammill would later base an opera. The enigmatic cover was designed by Bettina Hohls, ex-member of the psychedelic German rock band Ash Ra Tempel. Bettina Hohls had also contributed to the cover of Hammill's earlier album Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night. NICO.DRAMA.OF.EXILE Drama of Exile or The Drama of Exile are titles used to refer to two rock albums by Nico recorded in 1981. The first album was originally recorded in April and May. The second album is a re-recording of the first one, recorded in May. The album featured a Middle Eastern rhythm section and was produced by Corsican reggae bassist Philippe Quilichini. The original album was plagued by suspicious circumstances. There are different versions of the story, and the truth remains ambiguous. During the recording a sound engineer stole the unfinished record and sold it to the company Aura which released it immediately. Of course we sued them. We re-recorded the album but the court trial took forever. I had neither money nor strength to go on. The most commonly sold version of Drama Of Exile is unauthorized. We released the original form with Invisible Records but only in a very small edition and so it’s more a collector’s item. BRIAN.ENO.BEFORE.AND.AFTER.SCIENCE Before and after Science is the fifth studio album by British musician Brian Eno. Produced by Eno and Rhett Davies, it was originally released by Polydor Records in December 1977. Unlike Eno's previous albums which were written and recorded quickly, the album took over two years to complete. Several guest musicians from the United Kingdom and Germany helped with the album, including members of Roxy Music, Free, Fairport Convention, Can and Cluster. Over one-hundred tracks were written with only ten making the album's final cut. The musical styles of the album range from energetic and jagged to the later tracks which are more languid and pastoral. The album marks Eno's last foray into rock music for the 1970s as a solo artist, with all his remaining albums of the decade showcasing more of Eno's avant-garde and ambient music, which was hinted at on the second half of Before and After Science. The album was Eno's second to chart in the United States. The song "King's Lead Hat" was released as a single although it didn't chart in the United Kingdom. ECHO.&.BUNNYMEN.HEAVEN.UP.HERE Heaven Up Here is the second album by the British post-punk band Echo & the Bunnymen, released in 30 May 1981. In June 1981, Heaven Up Here became Echo & the Bunnymen's first Top 10 release when it reached number 10 on the UK Albums Chart. It was also the band's first entry into the U.S. albums charts when it reached number 184 of the Billboard 200. Heaven Up Here released the singles "A Promise" and "Over the Wall". Recorded at Rockfield Studios near Monmouth in Wales, Heaven Up Here was co-produced by Hugh Jones and the band. A generally well received album by fans in the United Kingdom and by critics, Heaven Up Here won the "Best Dressed LP" and "Best Album" awards at the 1981 NME Awards. The album has also been listed at number 471 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. After the public and press interest garnered from Echo & the Bunnymen's debut album, Crocodiles, the band released the Shine So Hard EP which maintained their profile. Work then soon began on their second album, Heaven Up Here. Following musical differences between the band and Crocodiles producers Bill Drummond and David Balfe, Hugh Jones was brought in to produce Heaven Up Here. Jones had previously engineered Crocodiles and co-produced Shine So Hard with Drummond. Jones would later go on to produce the band's 2005 album Siberia. The band were also given an additional producer credit. The album was recorded as Rockfield Studios near Monmouth in Wales during March 1981. In the liner notes to the 2003 remastered version of the album, lead singer Ian McCulloch said that he constantly had the American rock band The Velvet Underground's song "What Goes On" in the back of his mind. He also stated that the band wanted to record a soul album. In the same liner notes, bassist Les Pattinson said that the band was often lazy and hence had hired rehearsal space at the Ministry in Liverpool. He said this made them work harder and develop "language" in the rhythm. According to guitarist Will Sergeant, McCulloch considers Heaven Up Here to be Sergeant's album because he was bossy and a control freak during the recording. The photograph used on the front and back cover of the album was taken by photographer Brian Griffin. The picture shows the band on a wet beach in the south of Wales; there are dark clouds in the sky and the sun is low on the horizon causing the band to be silhouetted. The picture was taken on a day off from recording the album. The original album's cover art was designed by Martyn Atkins. The cover received the "Best Dressed LP" award in the 1981 NME Awards. Reynolds said that the band's manager Drummond saw them as representing "cold, dampness, darkness". The front cover picture of the original album was kept for the 2003 reissue. However, the design was altered slightly by graphic designer Rachel Gutek of the design company guppyart. The release contained an expanded booklet written by music journalist Max Bell giving the background to the album. The booklet also contains a number of photographs which are credited to Sergeant and PattinsonThe album was originally released as an LP by Korova in the United Kingdom on 30 May 1981. It was then released in the U.S. by Sire Records on 24 June 1981.[5] It was released elsewhere on Korova although with a different catalogue number. Side one of the LP contained five tracks and side two had six. The album was first released on CD on 16 May 1988. Along with their first five albums, the album was remastered and reissued on CD in 2003 containing five bonus tracks – these releases were marketed as 25th anniversary editions. "Broke My Neck (Long Version)", which was recorded at Tistedal Studios in Norway on 7 June 1981, is the B-side of the 12-inch single "A Promise" – an edited version was used as the B-side of the 7-inch single. The other four bonus tracks were recorded live at the Manley Vale Hotel in Sydney, Australia on 11 November 1981. The reissued album was produced by music historian Andy Zax and producer Bill Inglot. The only single from Heaven Up Here released worldwide was "A Promise" on 10 July 1981. The single stayed on the UK Singles Chart for four weeks and reached number 49. DAVID.BOWIE.-.STATION.TO.STATION Station to Station is the tenth studio album by English musician David Bowie, released by RCA Records in 1976. Commonly regarded as one of his most significant works, Station to Station is also notable as the vehicle for Bowie's last great 'character', The Thin White Duke. The album was recorded after he completed shooting Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth, and the cover featured a still from the movie. During the sessions Bowie was heavily dependent on drugs, especially cocaine, and recalls almost nothing of the production. EDDIE.AND.THE.HOT.RODS.-.LIFE.ON.THE.LINE Eddie & the Hot Rods' much-anticipated second album appeared in fall 1977, on the heels of the band's biggest hit single yet, the gloriously anthemic "Do Anything You Wanna Do." Like that attraction, Life on the Line revealed a considerably more mature musical outlook than did its predecessor, the fury-whipped Teenage Depression -- aware that there was no point in pursuing their original whiplash R&B-soaked visions in the face of the ever-accelerating hordes of punk, the Hot Rods swerved into a hard-hitting prototype of what would later become power pop, awash with guitars and riffs, but clinging to some genuinely memorable melodies, too. Of course, the band did not wholly eschew their past -- excuse the young Steve Lillywhite's sparkling production, and both the Pistols-guitar powered "Quit This Town" and the premonitory closer, "Beginning of the End" would readily have fit into Teenage Depression. Flip the coin, however, and the instrumental "We Sing...The Cross" reached far beyond any musical pastures the band had hitherto grazed, toward the same extremes of tension and release that made the early Television such a dynamic experience. The end result was an album that still screams "classic" today -- hard to believe, indeed, that prior to its release, it was difficult to imagine the band ever equalling the triumphant punch of the hit. Nine bonus tracks wrap up the reissue, albeit with considerably less illumination than those which complete the Teenage Depression reissue. The best is the B-side "Distortion May Be Expected," which wanders around similar territory to "We Sing...The Cross," with added jungle, crowd, and, oddly, dub effects, while three live tracks do include a magnificent reading of "Do Anything You Wanna Do." Elsewhere, "Till The Night Is Gone" and "Flipside Rock" fascinate via the presence of MC5 frontman Rob Tyner, in London to check out the punk scene, and winding up with the one band that really didn't wear his old band's name on their sleeve. Musically, the ensuing single was a disappointment, but the possibilities still intrigue. BEFORE.YOU.DIE.PART.60 LOU REED - THE BELLS The Bells is the ninth album by Lou Reed released through Arista Records in 1979. It is recorded in binaural sound. "City Lights" is a tribute to Charlie Chaplin. "Disco Mystic" is indeed played in a disco style, and the lyrics consist of those two words repeated. "Families" is an explicitly personal entreaty to his own parents and sister, with the closing line "Families that live out in the suburbs often make each other cry". "I Want to Boogie With You" has a doo-wop flavor (even if underneath the horns are the synthesizers which permeate this album), a I-to-IV Plagal cadence repeated throughout. The title track is said to be a favorite of Reed's, and he claims the lyrics were made up extemporaneously.
